Well, I want to start with a bit of good news (for me at least!) We just found out that Dan's tech school/training in Texas was cancelled for some odd reason MEANING he will be here with me for the summer! I am so pumped first of all because he will be here when our household goods arrive and can help settle in and put stuff together. Also, he will not miss my birthday or our 1 year anniversary! But of course, the training will still happen eventually, probably this fall. By then, hopefully I have some idea of what to do with my time and we will have a few more friends.
Of course, this didn't come out of nowhere..sort of. We heard about a week ago that he was kicked off the roster but we didn't think the entire class was cancelled (apparently this happened on May 4 and we were just now hearing about it!!). Thinking it was just a mistake, everyone was trying to send emails and get answers about the possibility of getting him back on the class roster so he actually could go to his training. It was kind of an emotional roller coaster this week because I just didn't know if my husband would be here in a week or not. One day it seemed like he wasn't going, then it felt like he would be so it was just the uncertainty that was throwing us off. But then today, we got a phone call from the Lt. Colonel saying that the training was cancelled. Hopefully, this doesn't change again this week and mess with us even more. All in all, we're so very thankful for a little extra time to settle in together. But just think if I would have stayed in the states all this time by myself, waiting for him to meet me in Texas! What a waste that would have been!! So it was SUCH a good thing that they got me on the orders in time to get over here with him. But now we do have to go car hunting again so that I can get out of the house during the day when Dan is hard at work...
Ooooohh Air Force..... good times :)
So aside from that, nothing too crazy this week. Wednesday, our little kitties got microchipped and a few vaccinations. The hardest part was hearing the squeal from the back (apparently it was a pretty big needle). But they were troopers and slept the rest of the day and were back on their feet in no time. Except now little Sophie seems to be limping as if she hurt her front paw. Hopefully nothing too serious and she heals up quickly. We are thinking the two of them just got to playing too hard and something happened. Otherwise, we have no clue since it happened while we were at church this morning. Their next set of shots is just a few weeks away. They are growing up fast!
Friday night, we went over to the Lt. Colonel's house for a cookout with some of the other officers in Dan's squadron. We enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, and some good conversation.
Saturday, we had a lovely date day up north! The drive was absolutely incredible as we were literally driving on the coast for an hour. By far - the best view I've ever seen for the longest amount of time (if that makes sense). The water was so blue and turquoise and the sun was shining... I can't even describe it so I took tons of pictures for you. Once we found the aquarium, we discovered it was in the Ocean Expo Park which was huge. The park was free and we just had to pay for the aquarium. For once, no parking fee! So we walked around to see what all was there, walked through the whole aquarium, saw dolphins and a few dolphin shows, and got completely sunburnt! Since we didn't know we would be walking around a park, we didn't even think to bring sunscreen. Oh well. We appreciated the sun for a change. When we walked in the aquarium, the first little station was a little petting tank with starfish and sea cucumbers and probably several other things that I don't know the names of. That was a neat little experience! And then there were lots of smaller tanks on the way to the whale shark tank. Everything was beautiful! Fish we had never seen before and tons of lovely coral. It was a great experience! Then of course the main attraction, the giant whale sharks! We probably could have sat there and watched them all day. We got many videos and pictures though to remember. After we left the aquarium, we ventured out for some true, authentic Japanese food. Ok, we ate at A&W... "All American Food". haha it was delicious! Chicken sandwich and curly fries and a good old Root Beer. That's the stuff! Then we made it back to Kadena just in time for a showing of Madagascar 3. What a day huh? But it was great, and the best part is that it turns out that it won't be our last date day for a while :)
Today (Sunday), we tried a new church called Koza Baptist. We loved it too. The hard part about living here is that there are actually tons of churches to check out. This one was quite a bit bigger than Calvary. I think I read a total of 500 people between their Saturday bi-lingual service and the 2 on Sunday morning. What I love about this church is their "Couples without Kids" community group and their Newlyweds Sunday School class... hehe. Nothing against people not in those groups. I just feel like that would be a really great way to meet some young people in roughly the same life situation as us right now. Sooo since Dan will be here this summer, we might check out those groups and try to get involved. Who knows, now we have all sorts of deciding to do. Today we also bought someone's bedroom furniture set! They have a very popular website out here called Okinawa Yard Sales (which is how we found our kittens too). So we were able to take the dresser home with us, but will have to have someone deliver the other pieces hopefully soon depending on the typhoon. It was half the price of the ones in the furniture set so I'd say we got a pretty good deal!
Once we got home, we had lunch and set out to buy a few things and when we got back, a few of our neighbors were sitting right outside our door chit chatting while their little kids were playing and invited us to sit with them. So I brought out some of the new waffle cone ice cream that we just bought, and we joined the conversation. It was great to finally get to know them a bit more since we haven't really had that opportunity yet!
We do have a typhoon that is supposed to hit tomorrow, so we stocked up on water and other yummy things today just in case we lose power tomorrow. Apparently, folks on base are the first to lose power and the last to get it back... guess we might experience that in the next few hours! When we first got here, they were also predicting a typhoon and we got nothing. So you never know when it might decide to go a little more to the east or to the west and we end up with another sunny day. I'll keep you posted!
P.S. The rest of the pictures will be on Facebook!
